CH/ST 820-30: Documents, Doctrines, and Eras: Wilhelmus à Brakel and Petrus van Mastricht in the context of Seventeenth- Century Thought

Course Description 

This course is an introduction to the period of the church of ca. 1625—ca.1750, and explores the relationship of Reformation, and Post-reformation era or early modern history, the development and codification of Reformed doctrine. Specific attention will be given to primary sources of seventeenth century systematic theology, and considers the implications of biblical exegesis, and the practice of piety in relationship to doctrinal formulation. The course will situate two representative works of seventeenth century Reformed systematic theology, the Christian’s Reasonable Services by Wilhelmus à Brakel (1635-1711) and the Theoretical-Practical Theology by Petrus van Mastricht (1630-1706) within the framework of seventeenth-century Reformed theology and its historical context, this discussion considers the rise of the new philosophy (such as Cartesianism) and other relevant topics, including Johannes Cocceius’ biblical exegesis and federal theology, Jean de Labadie’s separatism, and related issues.
