ST891-03 Issues in Contemporary Theology: Biblical Counseling in Historical and Theological Perspective

Course Description 

Lectures will explain the modern history of the biblical counseling (BC) movement, from Princeton Seminary (Alexander, Hodge, Warfield) to J.G. Machen at Westminster Theological Seminary (WTS, Philadelphia), to Jay Adams and later WTS faculty (Bettler, Powlison, Tripp, Welch) also working at the Christian Counseling and Education Foundation (CCEF), who sparked a national renewal in the field of biblical counseling that expanded through fundamentalist churches (already oriented to an anti-secular mentality), and other USA Reformed Presbyterian and Baptist seminaries and parachurch BC ministries and through their graduates, expanded throughout the world.

Lectures will develop a third generation WLC symphonic pedagogical perspective applied to Romans and use that to evaluate the BC theologies of Jay Adams, (WTS faculty, 1970-1983), Theology of Christian Counseling (1979), Robert Kelleman, Gospel-Centered Counseling (2014), Heath Lambert, Theology of Biblical Counseling (2016). Lectures will also use WLC-Romans’ symphonic theology to evaluate some of the attempts to develop a master-key to personal transformation in justification, adoption and new identity in Christ.

By readings, students will learn second generation BC critiques of secular psychology, read one of the best expositional books of Westminster’s theology with pastoral applications, develop their own third generation WLC symphonic pedagogical perspectives applied to Ephesians and use that to evaluate one BC theology book.

Students will be encouraged to continue the defense and exposition of truth in their linguistic, political, cultural, educational and church contexts, by their own commitment to confessional subscription and application of the symphonic pedagogical perspective (Exodus 20:2-17) of the Westminster Larger Catechism as “containing the system of doctrine contained in the Scriptures.”
